RM of Dauphin Holds Financial Plan Public Meeting

The RM of Dauphin is looking at a 3.9 per cent increase in expenditures this year, representing about $133,000.

CAO Laura Murray says there's an increase in staffing, and a big project in the back yard of the municipal grounds.

"Right now the guys bringing heavy equipment through there, they're sinking right now, so we have to dig all that up, put in new material, otherwise it's pretty much impassable for them, you know, after rains or in the spring."

Murray says some revenues are down, and a lot of other organizations have seen increases of about 3 per cent. She says they're also not taking any money out of accumulated surplus.

Whether your property taxes go up or down depends on assessment. Some farmland in the RM has seen an assessment increase of more than 45 per cent, while some residential properties are up about 10 per cent.

Changes in Recycling Coming to RM and City of Dauphin

The RM of Dauphin is one of several Parkland communities switching over to a Saskatchewan-based recycling company.

The RM, along with the City of Dauphin and several other municipalities, are switching over to Ottenbreit Sanitation Services out of Yorkton, with the transition scheduled for the fall.

RM CAO Laura Murray says OSS is a lot cheaper.

"This year we're not going to see the difference because [we're going to have] PDRI for the majority of the year. But next year when we're fully on with the new company, yeah, we're looking at over $50,000 per year savings."

RM of Dauphin residents who have it will lose door-to-door pick-up but large recycling containers will be placed strategically throughout the municipality as 24/7 drop-off locations.

The city says it will be offering residents rolling recycling bins, similar to the garbage bins used, early this fall.

Liberals and Conservatives Hold National Conventions

Two national party conventions get underway today in Canada.

The Liberals are in Winnipeg; the Conservatives are in Vancouver.

Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Robert Sopuck says he's looking forward to meeting with all Conservative party leadership candidates.

"The most exciting things happen behind the scenes, you know, the leadership candidates who have declared, you know, shaking hands, meeting people, asking for support."

The Liberals convention is on until Sunday. The Conservatives close out on Saturday.

Manitoba to Pilot Partnership Designed to Stop Abducted Children from Crossing Border

A new pilot project is being launched in Manitoba aimed at preventing missing and abducted children from crossing the United States border.

The Canada Border Services Agency is teaming up with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection to train its officers how to intercept missing children.

Since 1986, there have been 1,800 missing children that have been rescued at Canada's borders.

Jessica Huzyk with the child protection centre says they deal with cases where children have run away, or where they've been abducted by a parent.

Saskatchewan Community North of Yorkton Concerned About Hospital Services

People in the Saskatchewan town of Preeceville are angry over the fact some services are being temporarily taken away at their hospital.

Yesterday, they travelled to the legislature where they met with opposition leader Trent Wotherspoon.

During question period, Wotherspoon told the Saskatchewan Party government that the visitors are very concerned about the future of their hospital and asked Premier Brad Wall to keep the services as they are right now.

Wall responded by saying the government can not keep doctors in the community, and that this situation is no different from what other communities in Saskatchewan and rural Canada have faced.
