The province of Ontario is looking into implementing a minimum income similar to a policy that was in effect in Dauphin during the 1970s.

Yesterday the Ontario Liberals announced the communities of Hamilton, Lindsay and Thunder Bay will be participating in a three-year pilot project to see if providing residents with a minimum income would improve social outcomes.

According to Evelyn Forget, a health economist with the University of Manitoba, looking at mincome in 2017 will allow economists a better understanding into how a safety net may help workers today navigate an unpredictable job market.

From 1974 to 1978, 30 per cent of Dauphin's population was provided with a guaranteed level of income from the federal government.
