If a proposal in Gilbert Plains comes to light, you might have to slow down in the village.
Council is considering lowering the speed limit around the entire community from 50 kmph to 40.
Reeve Blake Price says it is all in the name of safety.
"It feels and appears that maybe our speed limit in the village is probably a little faster than it needs to be. If you drive the streets at 50 clicks, you're moving pretty good. The concern is if a little kid darts into the street at 50 clicks, you haven't got much of a chance [to stop]."
Price says it is part of their efforts to make the schools more safe.
"We started out at the elementary school here and put in some four-way stops. I think that's been pretty well accepted and it's working. Now, the idea is, let's have one speed zone instead of two or three speed zones in town, because we would have to reduce speed zones around the schools."
It could still be a while before a new speed limit is approved, as Price says there is still a lot of red tape to go through first.
