An official with Riding Mountain National Park says the long weekend should be great for guests, and so should the summer.

This weekend, they will be testing out trails for fat bikes. They are available to test out from the visitor centre, and the wider tires on the bikes mean they are good to take around the park.

Visitor Experience Manager Richard Dupuis says it should be a great experience for all who try it out.

"Basically, they can experience the trail. It's more stable, it goes over the routes with a softer tire and it's not that hard. It's part of a pilot program with Parks Canada. We're looking to see what the interest is out there and share that with people."

With temperatures forecast as high as 28 degrees this weekend, Dupuis says they are expecting the park to be very busy.

Most of the campsites have already been booked, but he says you should not have any problem finding something.

"They're mostly taken up, but we have spots here and there. There's either online or there's the call centre to see if there's space available. I think the whole townsite looks like it's full. I've talked to some of the business owners, and of lot of them say their rooms are booked up for the weekend as well."

With high temperatures, unfortunately, comes the risk of fires.

There are currently no fire bans in place for RMNP, but Dupuis asks that all guests use basic fire prevention techniques.

"I think it's just be smart. So basically, keep your fire in the fire box, never leave your fire unattended. As far as the fire rating, I think it's normal now. It's not high or low."

This summer, crews will be expanding the interactive indigenous programming so people can learn more about the Anishinabe people. As well, the campgrounds in Wasagaming are being upgraded this year, and another 12km of Highway 10 are being developed.
