If you live in Gilbert Plains, you could be eligible for a free smoke alarm.

The Gilbert Plains Fire Department, along with the Manitoba Government, Office of the Fire Commissioner, and Manitoba Firefighters' Burn Fund have teamed up to offer the Smoke Alarm for Every Family Program.

The program makes a difference by installing smoke alarms in eligible homes to reduce injuries or deaths in a fire. Fire Department personnel will visit eligible homes and install smoke alarms outside of bedrooms, with a maximum of two installed in homes.

This program is only offered to owner-occupied homes as landlords are responsible for installing and maintaining smoke alarms in their rental units.

Smoke Alarm Fact:

  • Having a smoke alarm increases your chance of survival by 50 per cent, when installed properly, has working batteries, and is within its 10-year service life.

If you are in Gilbert Plains, you can call the Fire Department at 572-1939 or the Municipal Office at 548-2326 to get one installed at no cost.
