Flu Shots Effective This Year

As the influenza season winds down, the Manitoba government says it appears the flu vaccine worked well or at least much better than last year, when it basically didn't work at all.

The H1N1 strain dominated the season, which peaked the first couple weeks of March.

As of April 9th, the province reported 259 people were hospitalized, and 74 admitted to intensive care. Twenty people died.

Medical Officer of Health Tim Hilderman says the flu vaccine was more than 70% effective this year.

Manitoba Man Partially Severs Finger

An independent unit that investigates serious incidents involving police in Manitoba is looking into how a drunk man in custody had part of his finger amputated.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba will examine the circumstances that led to the man's injury at the Main Street Project detoxification centre on March 25th.

Winnipeg police say the man grabbed hold of a cell door as it was being closed by officers, and that's when part of the finger was cut off.

The man was treated in hospital and released.

Fiat Chrysler Recall

More than 52,000 vehicles in Canada are part of Fiat Chrysler's recall of 1.1 million cars and S-U-Vs from around the world.

The automaker says the gear shift has caused confusion, leaving some drivers unaware if they've put the vehicles in park.

The recall covers the 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans and the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees.

Fiat Chrysler says it is aware of 41 injuries potentially related to the problem.

Energy East Pipeline Regulation Study

TransCanada has agreed to subject its Energy East project to Quebec's environmental regulations.

The pipeline builder will have to produce an impact study by June 6th.

Once the study is approved and both sides have pledged to respect a strict timetable, Quebec says it is committed to withdrawing an injunction subjecting the company to the more rigorous review process.

Energy East would bring 1.1 million barrels of oil a day from Alberta and Saskatchewan through Quebec and into New Brunswick for overseas shipping.

No Lotto Winners

We'll all be going back to work on Monday.

There were no winning tickets sold in last night's 24-million-dollar Lotto max jackpot.

That means next Friday's grand prize goes up to an estimated 34-million dollars.
