The City of Dauphin and Manitoba Hydro are trying to reduce energy consumption in the city.

A Hydro rep will start going door to door to homes and business in late May, telling people about new energy savings programs.

Dauphin Mayor Eric Irwin says using less power will not only be good for the environment, but also for the economy.

"Well, if people can save money on their energy bills, they'll have more money to spend in the shops and restaurants in town, and the businesses will benefit as a result of that."

While it might be a little expensive initially to take advantage of some of the new programs being offered, Irwin says they will pay for themselves in the long term.

"If this person can go from door to door and convince people of the efficacy of that, and the fact that the new upgrades will be paid for out of their energy savings so they're not out any themselves, it's really a win-win."

Hydro will also be monitoring the city's power consumption for the next two years to see how much was actually reduced.
