The former Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Gilbert Plains Municipality has been arrested and charged.

On January 16, the Dauphin RCMP and Manitoba RCMP Cyber and Financial Crime Unit took Amber Fisher into custody. Fisher is alleged to have defrauded the Municipality of upwards of $500,000 while employed.

An investigation involved numerous witness statements, along with the obtaining and review of extensive financial records and other reports.

“Any time you have an investigation of this duration that reaches the charge stage it’s a major milestone. However, the work is not complete,” said Constable Ricky Perkins, Manitoba RCMP Cyber & Financial Crime Unit. “We realize for the people affected, a lengthy investigation can feel as if there is no progress being made. In reality, there are many investigative steps taking place behind the scenes, and we’ll continue to work with the Dauphin RCMP Detachment until it’s conclusion"

Fisher has been charged with Fraud over $5,000, Theft over $5,000 and Use of Proceeds Knowing it was Obtained by the Commission of an Offence. Fisher was released from custody with conditions and will appear in Dauphin Provincial Court on March 18.

A parade of planets is currently on display in our night sky. The planets have aligned so that we can see six of them on the same night.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will all be visible in the night sky throughout the month.

Scott Young, an astronomer with the Manitoba Museum, says many hype it up as just a single day of viewing, but it's more than that.

"The universe has always got cool stuff going on. and sometimes it can be fun to see it without knowing what's going on and finding out what it was afterwards. Don't wait for someone to tell you when you should go out, any time under the stars is an amazing time."

You'll need a telescope to see Neptune and Uranus well, but our other four neighbors are easily visible to the naked eye!

This year's Journey for Sight Snowmobile Ride kicked off this morning in Flin Flon, with riders eventually concluding the four-day trip on Saturday in Brandon.

Dauphin Lions Club president Dean Lounsbury says their travels today will take them to Cranberry Portage and The Pas, which is where they will spend tonight.

Lounsbury adds people can make donations at any point along the journey.

"Between my son and I, we are about $3,000 in donations.  Anybody wanting to make a pledge and sees our support crew along the road can stop them and give a donation to them.  And tonight (Wednesday) we will be staying at the Anderson Suites in The Pas if anybody wants to stop by there and drop off a donation.  We are accepting donations right up until the end of the ride in Brandon."

Monday morning, RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle out of Winnipeg being tracked as heading towards Onanole.

Officers from several detachments as well as the Police Dog Service headed to the community, where they found the vehicle at a business on Wapiti Drive.

Mounties placed the driver under arrest, but as they tried to do the same to the passenger, he fled on foot.

That's when Marook went to work tracking down the suspect a short distance away, which led to his arrest.
