Making sure that everyone is looked after at Christmas time is the goal of the Angel Tree and the Christmas Hamper program.
Program coordinator Robin Gambler says the tree is now up in the center area of the Dauphin Marketplace Mall.
"All of the angels are up on the tree, and there is an age and gender of each child. They can grab whomever they want to buy for, purchase that gift, and if nobody is at the tree, they can drop it off at either the Dauphin Friendship Centre, or Parkland Title Loans, who are also collecting gifts for us. Any monetary donations, we prefer they go through either the Friendship Centre or Title Loans."
"The Angel Tree is for anyone who applies for a Christmas Hamper, all of the presents that are collected through the Angel Tree will ensure that every child receives a gift.", added Gambler.
They are looking for volunteers to sit at the tree between now and December 17th. If you can spare an hour or two, you can sign up on the schedule at the tree or call 204-638-5707.
Gambler adds applications for the Christmas Hampers will take place on Wednesday and Thursday at the Friendship Centre.
"If (the family) is lucky enough to be adopted out, the agency or business looks after that family and buys everything including toys. Families that do not get adopted out, will get their Christmas meat, milk, bread, potatoes, a toy for each child, and a gift card to finish off their grocery shopping for a Christmas dinner."
Applications for family hampers are being accepted today (Wednesday) from 11 until 6 in the back hall at the Friendship Centre, and tomorrow (Thursday) from 9 am to 1 pm in the front entrance of the Friendship Centre.
Gambler says they are anticipating a greater need for the Christmas hamper program this year.
"With the higher cost of living and everything like groceries and rent, I think there is going to be a lot more applications taken in for families. As well, through the food bank, we give out to individuals and couples on December 21st, and we are thinking that is going to be higher numbers as well."
The family hampers will be delivered on December 20th.

The public had their chance to discuss local policing during a Town Hall-style gathering Tuesday night at the Parkland Rec Complex.
About 40 people attended the hour-long event hosted by the Parkland RCMP detachment.
Dauphin detachment Sergeant Scott Linklater led the gathering, and was happy with the turnout.
"I did not know what to expect, so I was happy that people showed up. I think it was a good start for having a town hall in this community."
Linklater feels more events like this need to be held in the future.
"I think we need to find ways to communicate better with the community so that we work together. And I think this is something that we do not do very often with the RCMP, and I think we need to start doing more of this. So this was one of those times that it was important for us to let the community know what we are doing, how we do things, and get some feedback from them and answer the questions that they may have for what we do."
Staffing levels at the Dauphin detachment, RCMP training, and a sharp increase in the number of weapons offences locally were among some of the topics discussed during the evening.

Dauphin Recreation Services says the Kinsmen Aquatics Centre at the Parkland Recreation Complex will be closed all of this week and possibly longer, as they wait for a new booster pump for the pool's heating system.
They say the part is 8+ weeks away, but note that they are doing their best to source out something else.
In the meantime, all programs for this week are cancelled, and swimming lessons will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Canadian Mint in Winnipeg has released images of the latest Canadian coin set, now featuring the face of King Charles III.
It's a profile of the left side of the King's face, with him wearing a shirt, tie, and no crown.
A fine souvenir of a new royal era! Own the very first coins with the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III. Available...
Posted by Royal Canadian Mint / Monnaie royale canadienne on Tuesday, November 14, 2023
The design announcement comes on his 75th birthday.
His face on the coins replaces the image of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth the Second.
The mint says it has started the design process to put the King on the 20-dollar bill, but it will likely be years before it's issued.

As part of Ag Appreciation Week here at 730 CKDM, we're highlighting local voices on the importance of the Agricultural sector in Dauphin and the area.
Today we spoke with Stephen Chychota with the Parkland Chamber Of Commerce on what they do to support the local Agricultural communities.
The Chamber helps a lot of local businesses in many ways, from offering avenues of communication to insurance plans.
Working so closely with both producers and local businesses, Chychota sees the economic powerhouse that the Ag sector is.
"Ag in this sector is huge. It's the largest industry we have in the area, so it's a big economic driver for our region and our small businesses. it's part of that ecosystem we talk about where money changes hands in the community."
The work that the Chamber does and that Ag producers do are a better match than most people expect, as both of them work towards growing a strong community.
Chychota is proud that he can give back to Ag workers through some of the Chamber's programs.
"A lot of farms, family farms or corporate, there's a number around here that take advantage of the Chamber Group Insurance Plan specifically. They're Chamber members, so they benefit a little bit from everything we do, but also the group plan. They're able to, for their family and their staff, get benefits and health coverage for the things that they need."
To learn more about how the Chamber Group supports local ag producers, you can visit their website at parklandchamber.ca, or contact Chychota directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Be sure to stay tuned for more information and appreciation for the agricultural sector throughout the week as 730 CKDM continues our Ag Appreciation Week!

One man is in critical but stable condition following an attack and fire in Brandon yesterday.
Brandon Police Service received a call at around 1:15 pm on Monday about a man allegedly attacking people with a hammer on 15th Street.
While investigating that, a 9-1-1 call came in regarding a fire in the same area.
One man was pulled from the burning building, who an investigation determined had been assaulted by the alleged suspect of the assault.
He was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
A container of accelerant and a hammer were recovered at the scene of the fire, leading police to believe that the fire was deliberately set.
A second adult male was found to have been hit in the head with a hammer but only suffered minor injuries.
Police arrested a 32-year-old man and charged him with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and arson with disregard for human life.

Another edition of the fall Rotary Book Sale wrapped up over the weekend.
Organizing committee member Jean-Louis Guillas says they had in excess of 10,000 books donated for this sale.
He adds he was particularly impressed with how the Friday night "Spirits & Sweets" event went.
"We knew from the spring, with the Wine & Words, that the concept of matching the book sale with another event would work pretty well. This hall is fantastic, and the staff at Irving's are fantastic to work with. Carla was excited about the project and did research to find desserts that would pair well with various spirits.
Money raised through the Book Sale goes towards Dauphin Rotary's Scholarship programs, as well as towards sending local youth to Rotary Leadership conferences.
Guillas adds they are already looking forward to the spring Book Sale, which will be held in April of 2024.
"Whether we do a combination again is up to the committee to decide. It does take a lot of effort to put it on. Rotarians do a lot of that work, but we have great support from friends of Rotary, who like the events, and come out and support us by offering a few hours of volunteer time."
Guillas added plans are well underway for an Arts & Crafts event, that will be held in February, and will include craft beer tasting combined with Watson Arts Centre's Dauphin Art Group.

Parkland RCMP detachment is set to hold a Community Policing Town Hall tonight (Tuesday).
Dauphin RCMP Sergeant Scott Linklater says it has been a while since they have held an event like this.
"We will provide an update on what the detachment does, who we are, what we are doing, and how we are policing the community. Just give an update on what is going on, some tips on personal property security, and then I would like to finish with an opportunity for the public to ask some questions."
Linklater says they will not be able to answer questions related to specific police investigations, but rather policing in general.
"That is a big reason why we are doing the town hall, is we want to provide that forum for people to ask questions and have that discussion in an open manner so that everyone gets the same message."
Sergeant Scott Linklater feels it is important to have open discussions like this with the public.
"I do not think it is something that we do often enough, and I think that is where some of the misconceptions about what police do and what we are busy doing comes into play. So I think maybe having that discussion clarifies what responsibilities are placed on police right now, what we are dealing with, and how the community can actually help out."
He adds their duties are way more than policing.
"What we do in our day-to-day business is not just a police issue, it is a community issue. There are addictions and homelessness. And that is where the community can step up and help out as well. We all need to work to make Dauphin and the area a better place to live."
The town hall event begins at 7 pm tonight (Tuesday) in the Aspen Lodge at the Parkland Recreation Complex.
