The Provincial Government has recently announced a free weekend for visiting provincial parks and fishing in Manitoba.

From June 9th through June 11th, access to all of Manitoba's provincial parks will be free to anyone entering the parks.

Fishing throughout the province will also not require a license in most places in the province.

It is important to note that both of these free passes apply only to provincial areas, so national parks like Riding Mountain will still federally regulated passes for access and fishing.

Manitoba's Parks Manager of Recreation and Education Elizabeth Ostruck has some excellent tips for people who might be getting out to enjoy this free weekend in the wild.

"An enjoyable camping trip is all about being prepared. you should always prepare with bug spray and sunscreen, make sure you stay hydrated, only make campfires in approved fire pits, and never leave them unattended. We don't want any accidental forest fires in our provincial parks"

With moderate temperatures and sunny skies in store for the week, it's looking like an ideal weekend to get out and enjoy free access to Manitoba's beautiful parks and fantastic fishing.

You can get a sample of what you will see at Canada's National Ukrainian Festival (CNUF) 2023 by attending their kick-off party tonight.

The event will get underway at 5 and will take place in front of the CNUF office on 3rd Avenue Northeast, right across from the Co-op parking lot.

The night will include music by Boris and the Melody Kings, performances from the Zirka and Bratsva dance ensembles, a fundraising BBQ, discounts at the CNUF store, and 3 chances to win a weekend pass to the festival. All you have to do to enter is make any purchase at the store.

"If you've never been, you have to come. It's a little bit of a taste of what happens at the festival", said festival President, Kayla Gillis.

She also mentioned that they have some new board members who will be at the party and you are welcome to come down and meet them too.

When it concerns the festival itself, which happens during the August long weekend (August 4-6), Gillis said they will host a social on the Friday night. This will be in addition to the Zabavas that happen every year throughout the entire weekend. Also new this year, they will have a farmer's market.

Find a list of performers on their website, which is headlined by Shumka. Tickets are still available as well, but as they say, if you wait - you'll pay more at the gate!

The festival is also looking for volunteers. If you commit to a 4-hour shift, you will get a free day pass. If you volunteer for two 4-hour shifts, you'll get a free weekend pass. A free weekend pass AND a camping pass will go to anyone who volunteers for at least 3 shifts.

UPDATE - 1:31 p.m. Friday, June 09:

The RCMP have confirmed that they found the body of Melinda Lynxleg on the abandoned property they began to search for earlier this week in San Clara.

They also confirmed that they are treating this investigation as a homicide and because of that, no more information will be released at this time.

“The RCMP does not give up on missing people,” said Sergeant Laura LeDrew, a Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services investigator. “More than three years of searching, conducting interviews, collecting evidence. We never stopped. Finding Melinda is an important part of this investigation. She can now go home. But our work is not done.”

Lynxleg had been missing since March 31 of 2020.

If anyone has any information related to this investigation, please call the RCMP Major Crime Services Tip Line at 1-431-489-8110.

-----

The Manitoba RCMP were stationed in San Clara earlier this week after receiving a tip of suspected human remains at an abandoned property.

On Friday, they confirmed the remains were those of Melinda Lynxleg. Lynxleg, from Valley River First Nation, had been missing since March 31, 2020.

The RCMP will be having a press conference on Friday afternoon and we will provide more updates following that conference.

The Dauphin Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire last night that could have been a lot worse if not for a pair of cyclists who saw smoke and called it in quickly.

The cyclists noticed smoke coming from the DRS storage building/the old swimming pool on 4th Avenue Southeast and called 911. When crews arrived, the building was full of smoke due to some smoldering material in the back of a truck used with a wood chipper. See the report from Fire Chief Cam Abrey below:

Shortly before 10:00 pm this evening (Thursday, June 8th), DFD was dispatched for the report of a possible structure fire on 4th Avenue SE in the DRS storage building (aka the old swimming pool).

Upon arrival, crews made entry and found the building full of smoke. They quickly located the cause to be in the back of the truck used in conjunction with the wood chipper. The organic material in the box of the truck self heated to the point of combustion and was slowly smoldering.

Thanks to the quick call to 911 from two cyclists passing by that spotted smoke coming from the building, the fire was caught in the very early stages. Had they not noticed the smoke and the burning continued, it would have been quite developed within approximately an hour. We’re very thankful for the actions of these passersby that were simply out enjoying the weather and our fine city.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind the public, when an emergency vehicle is responding with lights and sirens activated, to please allow the vehicles to proceed. While enroute this evening, another individual on a bicycle refused to move for one of the responding trucks, and continued to swerve across the lanes preventing the driver from safely passing. They also shone a flashlight into the eyes of the driver and passenger of the responding truck as though trying to temporarily blind them. Please allow first responders to safely respond.

Ecole Laurier is hoping to build an outdoor classroom and you can be a reason why they do so.

The school will be hosting a Touch-A-Truck fundraiser on Saturday from 11 to 2 at the school's playground. The event will give kids an opportunity to see a number of different vehicles that will be on location.

The vehicles include a fire truck, an RCMP vehicle, a semi-truck, excavators, and jeeps, to name a few. While this event is geared towards kids between the ages of two and 12, those of all ages are welcome to attend.

If you are between two and 12, you will be getting a passport and a lunch.

Tina Krieser with the fundraiser says it's going to be a fantastic day for everyone involved.

"That passport and lunch will be just $5 for the kids between those ages," said Krieser. "The kids will then take the passports around every vehicle and once they get a sticker for each one, they can enter the passport in a free draw."

There will also be a BBQ canteen, face painting, live music, a door prize, and a special silent auction prize. All of the money raised will go towards building an outdoor classroom.

The RCMP has arrested Shawn Spence.

Original Article Posted at 3:40 pm on June 7:

The Manitoba RCMP has identified a suspect in yesterday's deadly shooting on Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

A warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Shawn Owen Spence of Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation has been obtained. Spence is wanted for First Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm While Prohibited, and Possession of a Firearm knowing its Possession is Unauthorized.

Spence is considered armed and dangerous. He should not be approached, and you should call 911 immediately if you see him. Police say that Spence lives on Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation, and is known to frequent Ebb & Flow First Nation.

Spence is 6'3", 180 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has a tattoo of the Pittsburgh Penguins logo on the left side of his neck. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Sandy Bay Detachment at 204-843-7701, or their local police.

Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in the province, both for those who live here and for all the tourists that frequent Manitoba's waters.

There's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that keeps the sport going.

Manitoba's Regional Fisheries Manager Maxime LeGal shares some of the details and dedication that goes into keeping the waters of Manitoba known far and wide as some of the best fishing around.

"The hatchery system overall produced about 34 million walleye fry and so these are allocated to different water bodies in the province, about 55 different lakes across the province."

Walleye is by far one of the most popular fish that many anglers want to see on their line, but the hatcheries in the province are always looking to create diverse populations.

"Our Whiteshell hatchery also produces different trout species such as rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and splake, and those are stocked through different lakes across the province as well."

LeGal detailed the critical importance of the work he and his teams do, as many of the bodies of water are considered "put-and-take" fisheries, where the annual stocking is the only thing keeping the number of walleye and trout sustained.

With the millions of fish going into the dozens of lakes, you'd think more people would spot the hatchery trucks driving around, but LeGal jests that the massive work that gets done can feel more like a covert operation at times.

"I joke around sometimes that we do this under the cover of darkness and depending on where we're stocking and how far we're traveling, sometimes we are literally stocking at night and in the dark. If you're lucky enough to see the hatchery truck going by then maybe you catch a glimpse and you know, but for most people its something that happens that no one is even aware of"

If you are out on the water, or casting from the shore, be sure to think of and thank the hard work of the people like Maxime LeGal and everyone with Manitoba's fisheries.

To reel this story in, LeGal said it best; "If you're wanting to go out fishing, good luck and tight lines".

Happy fishing!

Three of the streets around Mackenzie Middle School will be closed this morning (Thursday, June 8th) starting at 9.

The closures will affect school buses and parents/guardians who pick up students after school. Buses will pick kids up on 2nd Street NE behind the playground. Parents can pick their children up on 2nd Street NE as well, but just a little further up the road. See the map below for details.
