An increase in contamination is impacting the sale of recyclable materials throughout the province and country.

Many companies have pile-ups of materials after the recent announcement of China restricting the purchasing of recyclable materials with contamination.

Marketing and Communications Specialist with Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba, Sarah Wallace, explained what contamination is.

“Contamination is really anything that doesn’t belong in the blue box,” noted Wallace. “For example, in Manitoba, disposable coffee cups are not accepted and if we have too many disposable coffee cups in, let’s say, a paper bale, there’s a chance that may not be accepted with the end market.”

People need to know what can go in their recycling bin and can contact their municipality for a list and to the MMSM website http://stewardshipmanitoba.org/
