Federated Co-operatives Limited has opened a new state-of-the-art fertilizer terminal warehouse in Brandon.
The 68 thousand-square-foot terminal, which can house 27,500 metric tonnes of fertilizer, is one of two built by Federated Co-operatives this year. The two facilities cost a combined 75 million dollars to build. Dan Mulder Fertilizer Director at Federated Co-operatives Limited talks about why having the facility built in Brandon is a good thing for Manitoba.
“There’s a number of benefits to us having a terminal. Number it that we have rail access with these terminals, which is very, very important. Railway access provides us an opportunity to assure our retails and customers in Western Canada that we can get access to global products and global pricing. It also provides an opportunity to secure timely access to products. It’s also giving us an opportunity for more efficient utilization of capital dollars throughout the whole co-op, co-operative retail system. And it’s giving us the ability to improve."
Construction of the facilities in Hanley and Brandon was announced in 2016 and was completed on schedule. Both terminals began receiving and shipping product in April. Each terminal can load a super B trailer of blended fertilizer in 10 minutes and dispense up to 400 metric tonnes of straight fertilizer in an hour.
