After a long standing dispute over lumber pricing, the US has announced its first batch of duties on imported wood.

There is a major concern at potential loss of jobs across Canada in the softwood-lumber industry as a result of this move made by the US.

Local Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Robert Sopuck, noted that the price of lumber is already going down.

"The last time it happened BC alone lost 15,000 jobs, there's some 400,000 jobs across the country you know in the softwood lumber industry right now [...] we're not going to lose them all, but the duties that are being put on softwood lumber for certain companies and or provinces will certain up the price."

The estimated duty on Canadian softwood-lumber is 20 per cent.
