A Manitoba conservation group is asking the provincial government to do more in protecting their lakes and islands.
A group of islands located at the north end of Lake Winniepgosis are vulnerable to industrial development after the temporary park reserve status expired last Wednesday.
According to the Executive Director for the Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) Ron Thiessen, there are environmental concerns.
"The Manitoba government had proposed to establish three provincial parks that consisted nine different islands in the Lake Winnipeg watershed, these islands are in fact in Lake Winnipegosis... one of our concerns is that any industrial developments on these particular islands would potentially cause great damage to Lake Winnipeg which is already struggling."
Thiessen also says that the possibility of leakage and spillage from future development could ultimately effect Lake Winnipeg.
