It's time for a replacement jail in Dauphin, says the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union.

MGEU President Michelle Gawronksy issued a statement last week saying the needs of Dauphin's jail have outgrown its space.

She says as of Monday Dauphin's jail is 126 per cent over capacity.

"It's definitely a safety and health hazard for both inmates and the officers who are there. When they don't have the space to be able to have folks living comfortably and safety, you know, this is something that this government needs to address now."

The new government has previously said it is reviewing capital projects in the province.

CKDM expects to speak to Justice Minister Heather Stefanson later today.
