A now 20-year-old man badly burned in a house fire in 2013 described to court yesterday what it was like waking up to the fire and then running through it.

The man, who was 17 at the time, was called as a Crown witness yesterday. He told court he wasn't thinking straight when he first became aware of the fire and opted to run through it instead of breaking a stuck window in his second-floor bedroom.

He said his body was set on fire the second he entered the smoke, but he forced himself to keep going, telling himself he wasn't going to die there.

Trial began last week for two men accused of starting the fire.

27-year-old Sean Nepinak and 25-year-old Seamus Nepinak have both pleaded not guilty to four counts of arson and one charge of participating in the activities of a criminal organization.

They are being tried by judge alone, not a jury. The trial continues.
