Alcohol Believed to be a Factor in Fatal Collision

A Winnipeg woman has died in a two-vehicle collision just outside of Lorette.

Officers attended the scene of a crash between a car and a pickup truck around 5 yesterday morning.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 29-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three people in the truck were hurt with what police call non-life threatening injuries. They are in stable condition and all are from Winnipeg as well.

Police say alcohol appears to be a contributing factor to the collision and the investigation is ongoing.

Busy Sunday for Manitoba Hydro Crews

Hydro says a burnt pole took out power to about 360 Dauphin customers last night.

Plenty of Manitoba communities had power issues thanks mostly to stormy weather and downed trees, including Swan River, Neepawa, Russell, and Brandon, among others.

At one point yesterday, Hydro said on social media it had 4,000 customers without power.

Voluntary Evacuation of Whiteshell Still in Effect Due to Flooding

The Manitoba government is advising cottagers to remain on a voluntary evacuation of the Whiteshell region following heavy rain.

The province says a number of roads remain washed out, leaving cottage owners stranded with only boat access.

People in the area were first advised to leave on Saturday.

Officials are waiting for the water to recede in many areas before repairs can begin.

Man's High-Profile Past Not Believed to Be Connected to His Killing

Winnipeg police confirm that the victim of a fatal stabbing was once at the centre of a high-profile case against the Ku Klux Klan.

Forty-five-year-old James Edsel Tucker died in hospital after being found with stab wounds in an apartment early Thursday, and two men have been charged in the death.

Const. Jason Michalyshen says Tucker had changed his name, and used to be William James Harcus, but investigators don't believe the death is connected to his racist past.

Harcus and two others were tried in 1992 on charges of promoting hatred in connection with alleged activities on behalf of the Klan in Manitoba, but the charges were not proceeded with amid allegations of police misconduct.

Brexit Market Fallout

Trading in shares of two big British banks was temporarily suspended this morning amid volatility in the stock markets following Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

The London Stock Exchange says trading the Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays was automatically suspended for five minutes when they briefly moved out of the trading range of eight per cent.

Before the markets opened, Britain's Treasury chief said the country's economy was in better shape to weather the storm of the UK's exit from the EU than it was during the 2008 financial crisis.
