In an effort to teach her students about sustainability in the environment and how important recycling is, this teacher and her students collected plastic bags for a contest.
Linda Murkin who is the grade 3 & 4 teacher at Winnipegosis Elementary School says her students managed to collect 17,543 plastic bags to take part in a province wide contest with Walmart and Recycle Everywhere.

Murkin says they promoted themselves everywhere.

"Word of mouth but we also went on bargain bin and we got a lot of donations and the kids made posters and put them up in town as well so that the community got involved as well, we had lots of community people bringing in bags as well."

Murkin says they took part in this contest back in May and they are just waiting on the results.

"Because other schools within the province could participate so we don't know if we've won anything yet or not. Because it was a contest whichever school per capita collected the most bags could win some money to go toward projects within our school."
Murkin says that they would announce the results in June, so she says they should know in about a week or so.

Back in October they collected bags for Bag Up Manitoba and collected 12,000 bags and was presented with a flower box and a park bench made from recycled plastic bags.
