The province has released its latest fiscal update.

Overall, expenditures from the 2015-2016 fiscal year were $148 million higher than what was estimated back in March by the former NDP government, and revenues were down $180 million.

The largest increase in spending came from healthcare, which rose by $66 million. The report says tax revenues fell by $33 million.

The figures explain why Manitoba's deficit was much higher than initially thought, which is now pegged at around $1 billion.

Premier Brian Pallister is set to unveil the new Progressive Conservative's budget on May 31, which will be his first since coming into power in April.
