Federal NDP on the Lookout for New Leader

A day after party members at the national NDP convention in Edmonton voted to hold a race for a new leader within the next two years, there are whispers in the wings about who might take a run at Tom Mulcair's job.

No one openly challenged Mulcair during his bid to stay on as leader ahead of yesterday's vote.

But some of his rivals from the 2012 race, including Manitoba MP Niki Ashton, declined to endorse the leader ahead of the convention.

And former Toronto MP Peggy Nash penned a scathing critique of the NDP's last election campaign in the days before the convention.

Gilbert Plains Homecoming Going Way Back

Gilbert Plains is getting a medieval feast as part of its homecoming celebrations.

One of the organizers, Reba Meyer, says the feast will be held July 7 in the Rodeo Arena.

"We will be serving our guests underneath the tent, and (there will be) a performance to follow that will be awesome: we have all kinds of characters, we have jousters, we have Ben-Hur, we have horses, we have a cast of about 80 local people that are partaking in this."

The Gilbert Plains homecoming was one of several groups to receive grants from the Gilbert Plains Community Fund, which held its 8th annual dinner and fundraising event on Saturday.

Bracelet Proceeds Given to Bear Clan Patrol

A pair of women who met while searching for a missing Manitoba teen earlier this year have presented a cheque for over $2,000 for a group that helped with the search.

Paige Buors and Ramona Waldner sold about 3,000 bracelets for causes in Cooper Nemeth's memory.

At the request of the teen's family, they presented much of the proceeds to the Bear Clan Patrol.

Nemeth's body was later found in a garbage bin behind a Winnipeg home and 22-year-old Nicholas Bell-Wright faces charges of second-degree murder.

Leaders' Income Gets Spotlight in MB Election Campaign

Manitoba's election campaign has turned into a battle over the release of tax returns.

NDP leader Greg Selinger invited the media to his home Sunday morning to share details of his 2014 tax return. According to the return, Selinger's total income was $147,374, and his net income was $137,292.

The Liberals responded by releasing leader Rana Bokharis' T4, which listed her income as $24,584 after deductions.

The Progressive Conservatives issued a statement calling Selinger's move "desperate, American-style politics'' meant to divert voters' attention.

The party says that while Selinger claims he's transparent, he lied to Manitobans about not raising the PST and refuses to release documents related to the Tiger Dam deal.
