The Manitoba government is returning some stolen funds to seniors after 14 people were targeted by scams.
Investigations into this scam found that 2 Ontario residents had stolen nearly 150 thousnad dollars in whats known as "the grandparent scam" were criminals pose as a grandchild who is in legal trouble and needs money for legal action.
In the RCMP's veiwing of surveillance footage, the two suspects were identified and arrested, and roughly 75 thousand dollars of the stolen funds were seized..
justice minister Matt Weibe announced recently that through the criminal forfeiture act, this recovered money will be going back to the victims immediately.
Minister Weibe also shares a warning, noting "scams like these can happen to anyone,The people committing crimes like these can be quite convincing and will play on the emotions of the victim, which makes this even more upsetting."
