The Dauphin Kings played one of their better home games of the season Friday night as they beat the Selkirk Steelers 4-3 at Credit Union Place.
Kirklan Lycar (11) and Matthew Greening (7) both broke out of goal scoring slumps in the second period to give the Kings a 3-2 lead and that seemed to really lift the club. Keaton Leininger (7) scored his first as a King and it turned out to be the game winner early in the third period. Landon Plett (5) had the other goal for Dauphin to open the team's scoring on the night.
A handful of Kings forwards had good nights. Chance Thomas and Romano Morrison didn't get any goals but they did generate a lot of opportunities. Dauphin lost Romano Morrison in the second period, but the forward returned to the ice in the third and played excellent with a handful of quality scoring chances. Kelby Picard also looked good, nearly notching his first MJHL goal.
With Jarrod Schamerhorn out with a lower body injury Connor Shaw stepped up and played very good in net for the Kings. The key was he made important saves at important times for Dauphin. In the end he turned aside 24 of 27 shots. The Kings put 23 shots towards Selkirk's Evan Robert. The quantity of shots might not have been very high for Dauphin Friday, but the quality was. They also hit three posts in the opening period.
