A Manitoba woman is among two new independent senators appointed to the Upper Chamber by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Mary Jane McCallum, a member of the Manitoba Dental Association, will join Mary Coyle of Nova Scotia in the Senate.
According to a written statement, Dr. McCallum is an advocate for social justice who has provided vital dental and health services to northern and First Nations communities.
Ms. Coyle is a long time champion of women's leadership, gender equality, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Both women were appointed through the open merit-based selection process originally put into place in early 2016.
