School is starting this morning for most students in the Mountain View School Division.
With students back at school, drivers are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and watch for children around schools and buses. There are some school zones in the division that have reduced speed limits in a few communities. Superintendent for Mountain View School Division, Donna Davidson, reminds drivers about rules they must follow when they see school buses flashing red lights.
“Whenever school starts and school is in session, we always see an increase and flow around our schools, and we will obviously see school buses in front of our schools that will be stopping to either load or unload children. And what’s very, very important is that motor vehicles watch for the school bus and be aware that the flashing amber lights on the school bus signal that the school bus is about to stop. And that we should stop, and that we should stop 5 meters behind or in front of the school bus when its red lights are flashing, and the stop sign is extended. It’s critical that drivers wait until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop sign has been retracted prior to passing a school bus.”
Being cautious and mindful of students is important, around your community not just around schools according to Davidson.
