The province of Manitoba is taking an important step in trying to stop the spreading of Zebra Mussels.
Minister of Sustainable Development Cathy Cox announced on Thursday the launch of an awareness campaign entitled "Spot the Stripes, Stop the Spread".
According to Minister Cox, spreading awareness is an important first step.
"I think it's important that we raise awareness, and educate individuals, on the importance of ensuring that we don't spread zebra mussels. We can eradicate them, so it's important that we prevent any further spread into any other lakes and rivers.
In addition, the campaign will appeal to the next generation of Manitobans, enlisting the help of children in reminding family members to do their part.
This will be done by the launch of a contest for children under the age of 12 to submit their suggested name for the zebra mussel featured in the AIS awareness campaign.
