The Manitoba government has appointed eight new individuals to the Manitoba Women's Advisory Council.

The announcement was made by Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Rochelle Squires -- minister responsible for the status of women -- yesterday during the province's first Women's Equality Week.

According to Minister Squires the new advisory council is concentrating in one area of the province in particular.

"We do believe that we've got a fairly good representative of the Manitoba population that will bring those voices to the table, rural Manitoba is a focus for us and we want to hear from a lot of rural women because their experiences often times might be different from our urban women and their needs might different... we want to ensure that government polices and programs reflect those needs."

The third week in January has been deemed Women's Equality Week by the province promoting gender equality.
