Doctor recruitment and retention remain issues in Prairie Mountain Health.
The health authority held its annual general meeting at Elkhorn Resort in Riding Mountain National Park yesterday.
CEO Penny Gilson says recruitment and retention is an ongoing challenge, but they are looking at ways to keep doctors in communities as long as they can.
"Maybe that will lead to them actually putting roots in the communities and staying. And I think it's those practice environments. We've got to be talking to Manitoba medical grads and to physicians and other (health care) providers, all providers: what type of environment will be conducive to you wanting to practice here and stay here?"
Gilson told the AGM that due to an assessment change, the health region has seven physicians through the international medicate graduate program this year (who should be ready next spring) compared to two the year before.
