The executive director of the Dauphin Friendship Centre is encouraging local indigenous people to fill out an online survey meant to help strengthen the federal government's Urban Aboriginal Strategy.

The National Association of Friendship Centres, in partnership with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, is conducting a survey online, asking what needs the government is or isn't currently meeting.

In the latest Dauphin and District Chamber of Commerce newsletter, Jeremy Smith says the survey will affect many organizations, including the DFC.

Smith says the reason this first-time survey is being done is more than half of First Nations people and the majority of Metis people in Canada live in urban settings.

"With this survey, the government wants to establish: what are the needs of urban aboriginal people (in) the areas of education, health, and employment," says Smith.

The survey is completely anonymous.

It has been up since August 9 and will remain up until August 26th.
