Waywayseecappo First Nation is recovering after a terrifying tornado touched down last night.

Three tornadoes were confirmed by Environment Canada yesterday, the first one developing near Binscarth around 4:45 pm.

Chief for Waywayseecappo, Murray Clearsky said he took matters into his own hands when the storm came through. He added, "We let it play itself out, and then I made my rounds to make sure everybody was safe right after it happened... in fact, it was still happening you could see debris floating in the sky."

Shortly after the Canadian Red Cross was notified of the situation and immediately started assembling volunteers to go and help the displaced residents.

Currently working alongside the community of Russell, the Canadian Red Cross has been providing food, shelter, and water to people of the first nation.

Spokesperson for the Canadian Red Cross, Jason Small says they will stay in Russell as long as they are needed. He added, "This is part of an agreement with the federal government to support evacuations in Manitoba First Nations, shortly after six it was indicated that they would be going to Russell... we put together a team of volunteers."

Twisters also touched down in Rossburn and Elphinstone.
