Getting an eye exam may seem like a chore, but it can actually help save your life.

The eyes are a great way for Optometrists to detect diseases and conditions like hypertension, cancer, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Optometrist,Tim Watters says they can also detect diabetes.

"Unfortunately diabetes can damage the eye quite severely and sort of really limit a persons vision. So, we like to catch it early because we now have some really good treatments to sort of prevent that from happening or at lease limit the amount of vision that the person looses."

Eye exams should be done every year for kids aged 5-18, every two years for people aged 19-60 and 60+ should be done at least once a year.
