In an effort to make Winnipegosis a destination spot, Mossy River Municipality is taking a look at a local bird sanctuary.
Red Deer Point Bird Sanctuary (which is north of Winnipegosis) has nationally significant numbers of breeding Great Blue Herons as well as Double Crested Cormorants, is also a staging and molting area for diving ducks like Rehdeads and Canvasbacks. Which makes it listed as an Important Bird Area (IBA).
Kate Basford, head of council for the Mossey River Municipality says they are looking for site caretakers and Monitors.
"The time requirements are not that much, just 10 to 15 hours a year. So you would go out to the site and you would identify the birds."
Basford also says, while everything is there they have just one more detail to figure out.
"One of our challenges is how do we get there? There's are no roads directly to it, it's water bound. That was one of the things that was identified was boat trips. So maybe there is a way of you know, making all of this click."
They are holding a public meeting about this with Nature Manitoba this Saturday at 9:30am at the Mossy River Inn.
