War Amps key tags are being mailed to Manitobans this week, while the service turns 70 this year.

Safety events coordinator James Jordan says it all started by war-amputee veterans returning from the First and Second World Wars.

"Being servicemen, they wanted to provide a service to Canadians, as well as create funds for their programs within the War Amps to help support themselves, and have employment and work in a sheltered workshop at the time."

Jordan says the free key tag service raises a lot of awareness for War Amps. He says those who want to donate can, but there is no obligation.

He says they believe the service is more vital than ever with many keys now electronic with high replacement costs.
