If you know someone who has done great humanitarian work, you can nominate them for the 2016 Power of Humanity Awards.

The Red Cross will be awarding two people who go above and beyond for others with the Manitoba Humanitarian of the Year and the Young Humanitarian of the Year awards.

Red Cross VP for Manitoba and Nunavut Shawn Feely says there are no specific causes you need to be a part of, just the desire to help others.

"People who have been educating the public on the meaning and the importance of humanity and dignity, promoting respect for the human being. You know, it's fairly wide open, it's what you think is meant by humanitarian."

Feely says the Red Cross gives out these awards because people doing humanitarian work do not do it for the recognition.

"It's no secret that people who do the right thing in the communities, they don't do it for themselves. They don't stop and thank themselves, so I think it's upon the Red Cross and other people to take the time and acknowledge the efforts of these individuals."

Last year's Humanitarian of the Year was Larry McIntosh of Winnipeg for his work with Peak of the Market, a local produce company owned by the growers. The 2015 Young Humanitarian Award went to Stonewall's Rhianna Holter-Ferguson for her efforts to promote bullying prevention.

Nominations can be made at redcross.ca/manitobapoh, the deadline is May 16. The winners will be announced in June, and will receive their awards in Winnipeg in September.
