Winnipeg Teenager Sentenced for Killing Senior
A Winnipeg teenager has been sentenced to seven years in jail after pleading to second-degree murder in the death of a First Nations advocate last May.
A publication ban prohibits naming either the victim or the accused, who were known to each other.
The 16-year-old had originally been charged with first-degree murder for the killing in May 19, 2015.
The 66-year-old woman died after being attacked in her home, which is the same place where the youth was arrested.
The Crown and defence offered a joint recommendation for a maximum youth sentence, to which the judge agreed.
The first four years will be served in custody; he will spend the final three years under conditional supervision.
Kidney Shortage in Manitoba
Transplant Manitoba says the average person who needs a kidney transplant in the province could have to wait as long as five years.
Physician Dr. Faisal Siddiqui says that pretty well mirrors the situation in Canada overall, that the demand for kidneys is much higher than its supply.
But he says that's not because people just aren't wanting to donate.
"To be an organ donor, you have to meet some pretty specific criteria in terms of how well your organs are functioning, the type of illness that leads to the situation where you could be a donor in terms of your own health. Unfortunately, there aren't as many organs going around as there are people who need them.
When asked about 3D printers being able to manufacture working organs, Dr. Siddiqui says it is a promising idea, but he isn't quite ready to trust the technology yet.
Earth Hour Tonight
Canadians are being asked to join millions around the world to mark Earth Hour by turning off their lights for one hour tonight starting at 8:30.
The event, held on the third Saturday in March, was launched in Australia in 2007 to draw attention to environmental issues, including the need to fight climate change.
Last year, Earth Hour was marked by some 7,000 cities in 172 countries.
