Community Protests Manitoba Rural ER Services

People rallied in Eriksdale late last week to voice concerns over their emergency room situation.

The community's ER is mostly nurse run and a councillor says EMS often won't take patients to the facility.

Councillor Keith Lundale, one of the people spearheading the rally, says when you're counting on health care, you want to know it's reliable.

"Do you pick the day that you want to get sick? No, nobody does that. And so you need to know, when (your) health fails, that somebody's there for me. And I mean, this facility is... you can walk there or drive there but don't always expect that if EMS picks you up at your door in a critical care situation that you're going to go to the hospital of your choice."

Interlake MLA Tom Nevakshonoff was at the event, as was PC candidate Derek Johnson.

MB Community Hoping to Keep Credit Union ATM

A southern Manitoba community is fighting to keep its ATM.

The RM of Piney is calling on Access Credit Union to keep a 24-hour ATM in Sprague.

There's an ATM in South Junction that's 11 kilometres away, but R-M councillor Melanie Parent says it's not a Credit Union machine so fees are involved, and the nearest Credit Union ATM is 75 kilometres away in Vita.

Parent says a lack of an ATM will hurt local organizations that have weekend fundraisers, which are typically cash-only events.

France Honours Manitoba War Veteran

A Manitoba man has received one of France's highest honours for his service in the Second World War.

John Johnson survived the Dieppe raid in 1942 and returned to France in Normandy as part of the D-Day operations where he was wounded in the leg.

Johnson was only 17 when he joined the Cameron Highlanders of Canada Regiment with permission from his parents.

Winnipeg's French consul says the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour can only be bestowed on a veteran who is still alive and who served in the D-Day campaign.

Turkish fighter jets have attacked Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq, just hours after a suicide car bombing in the capital Ankara.

Authorities blame Kurdish militants for the bombing, which left at least 37 people dead and dozens more wounded.

The country's state-run news agency reports that 11 planes raided ammunition depots, bunkers and shelters linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

Police also carried out raids in southern Turkey and detained at least 36 suspected rebels.
