A planned power outage to Grandview is underway as of 10 o'clock this morning in order to get rid of ice from power lines.
Hydro crews will create a controlled short circuit in the lines to melt the ice until it falls off. How long the outage lasts depends on weather conditions and how quickly the ice melts.
The risk of not doing this is the weight of the ice can snap wood poles and bring lines down, which would cause a longer outage to repair the damage.
In an email to CKDM, Manitoba Hydro says, "We know this is frustrating to our customers in Grandview, and our goal is to minimize the interruption and do this work as quickly and safely as possible."
