A local shelter dog is one paw closer to getting much-needed surgery.

Shep, a mini sheltie x at the Parkland Humane Society, badly hurt his leg when he was younger, and a night of fundraising plays at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School this week, raised $253 for his operation.

Rocky's Legacy Fund Director Cam Bennet hopes Shep will be able to have surgery soon, but they shouldn't rush into it.

"Obviously, the sooner the better type of thing. We do sort of want to make sure we have the funds to cover it. We've actually had donations coming in as well. People from our Facebook page, as well as our website, so the word has gotten out, so we've had some donations coming in. Once we have a better handle on our finances, then we'll know sooner."

Bennet says Shep will likely need to have his paw amputated, and is not sure at this point exactly how much that will cost, but thinks it could be up to $1,500.

Bennet's foster dog, Chevy, took to the stage as a featured cast member in one of the high school's plays, helping raise money for her friend.

Prior to the performance, DRCSS Band and Drama Teacher Andrew Coombs said the rest of the cast got excited when they learned about Chevy's involvement.

"Obviously, they got excited the first time, but it's been great and, actually, I've been telling all my students who aren't in the class that there's a dog, and that's enticing some of them to show up and see the play just to see the dog."

$1 from every $5 ticket was donated to Rocky's Legacy Fund, which will pay for Shep's surgery.

Those interested in donating to help with Shep's surgery can go to the Parkland Humane Society or Pet Junction.
