It was one year ago today that the Towers Hotel in Dauphin was destroyed by a fire.
Jeremy Smith, the executive director of the Dauphin Friendship Centre, says the biggest memory for him from that day, was the work the centre did to help all the evacuees from the fire.
"Within two weeks after the fire, all the evacuees from the Towers were housed in temporary housing and some of them were in permanent housing. Unfortunately due to the lack of housing within Dauphin, some of them did have to be relocated surrounding communities as far away as Minitonas."
Smith says if a similar situation were to occur in Dauphin, the DFC and their local partners are more able to address the immediate needs of people dealing any kind of disaster.
"I think it also provided the opportunity for everyone to learn from each other to see who has what supports that they can be providing, and how can we best address the immediate needs of any people in a disaster."
Fire Chief Cam Abrey says the Dauphin Fire Department still reflects on the fact that all of the occupants and residents in the building made it out unharmed.
