A petition calling for a sidewalk on Hawthorne Avenue East was part of last evening's city council agenda.
It's something the city's active transportation committee has considered, and Mayor Eric Irwin says he's optimistic about it happening some day.
"Nobody can presuppose what the priority is going to be before having the priority meeting but I know that we had discussed that in the part so I'm sure it'll get done at one point or another."
Irwin says the city is serious about active transportation.
"We can only do so much each year and Jackson was at the top of the list and it's done. So give council credit, we do have an active transportation committee that's willing to spend money. They're not just going to sit around talking about what needs to be done."
It was said at last evening's council meeting the city's active transportation committee is exploring options for the northeast of Dauphin.
A memo to council from the city's public works director says there is very little impediment to building a sidewalk on Hawthorne, but with no other sidewalks around, there's nothing to connect it to. He recommends the committee continue to explore options in the entire area.
