The best U19 rugby players in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan will be coming to Dauphin next month.

The Parkland Rugby Association will be hosting the Manitoba/Saskatchewan Championships. Along the Parkland teams, clubs from Minnedosa, Interlake will join several other teams from around the province.

Several teams also from Saskatchewan will be taking part n the event. It's both girls and guys. There will be both U11 and U13 divisions. There will also be U15, U17, and U19 boys and girls divisions. Roughly 25 teams will be taking part in the event.

"We're really excited about this. We've worked really hard to develop rugby in the area," said Rod Carberry. "One of the stipulations for hosting this event is you need more than one schedule and we're currently getting a second one ready. We did a rough schedule and it shows about a 64-game schedule over two fields. It's going to be a fantastic event and we're really excited to host it and get another field as well."

Within the past few years, rugby has taken a definite step up in the Parkland. Both the Parkland Pirates program and the Dauphin Clippers program has done well locally and on a provincial level. With the best of the best set to embark on Dauphin, Carberry is confident the team can have success.

"Our teams should have good success. We have some really good athletes. Our girls 7's program for the Clippers is the strongest it's ever been. For the first time ever, we'll have a junior varsity and varsity team," continued Carberry. "Our teams have done well in these types of events before and we expect the same come next month."

The schedule has yet to be released, but when it is we'll have you covered. If you've never had the chance to watch a game of rugby before, Carberry is inviting everyone down to the field.

"It's such a fast paced game. It's sort of like a 4-on-4 hockey game, things happen quick and anything can happen," Carberry concluded. "If you're unsure about the game, it's a great idea to come down to the games and see for yourself, I think you'll highly enjoy it."

The event takes place on October 12-13.

Prior to puck drop on Friday night at Westoba Place, the night was sure to be a historic one for a few reasons. The first reason was the Brandon Wheat Kings were set to unveil a brand new state of the art jumbotron at centre ice.

Another reason it was a special night was because the Winnipeg ICE were playing their first regular-season game in franchise history.

60 minutes after it started, it’s certainly a night the ICE organization won’t ever forget. The team scored a 3-2 win over their new provincial rival Wheat Kings at Westoba Place.

The first period was full of penalties. It took just 21 seconds to see our first ejection of the season. That’s when Ridly Greig received a five-minute major for a check to the head on Winnipeg’s Chase Hartje. At the same time, Winnipeg’s Isaac Johnson took a roughing penalty.

In all, there were 15 penalty minutes between the two teams in the first.

In front of just less than 5000 fans, Winnipeg got on the board first. Connor McClennon scored 5:58 into the second to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. Carson Lambos and Brad Ginnell earned the assists.

After acquiring him in the offseason, it didn’t take Isaac Johnson long to show his stuff. He scored his first marker with just less than three minutes left in the second at the 17:11 mark. Michal Teply earned his first assist and the primary one while the second went to Owen Pederson.

With just 33 seconds left, Teply kept it going. He scored what would end up being the game-winning goal with Carson Lambos and other Import selection Nino Kinder getting the assists.

With a 3-0 lead going into the third, Brandon made it a game. Vincent Iorio took a pass from Lynden McCallum and he beat Dean McNabb, who was picked up earlier this week from Regina to trim the deficit to 3-1. Luka Burzan also got an assist.

The Wheat Kings didn’t stop there. Veteran Zach Wytinck scored his first of the game at the 15:20 mark with Burzan getting credit for his second assist.

Despite late pressure, Brandon wasn’t able to get any closer as Winnipeg capped off the historic night with two points.

The Dauphin Kings led 1-0 after 20 minutes, but they couldn’t keep it together in a 6-3 loss to begin their season.

In a game that was full of turnovers, Swan Valley was able to capitalize several times to win their home opener.

With 10:04 left in the first frame, Nakodan Greyeyes scored his first of the season in what was a solid game for him. Dauphin led 1-0 after 20, but the second was mostly all Stampeders’.

Just 2:33 into the second, Carter Cockburn set up Nathan Carl who tied the game up.

Tommy Cardinal made it 2-1, 8:11 into the second. That’s when Dauphin struck back.

Leeam Tivers went bar down 13:28 into the second to tie the game up.
