The Jewel of the Parkland happened to be the coldest part of the province on Thursday morning.

According to the Weather Centre of Manitoba, it was -36°C in Roblin and that's without the windchill. The hot spot in the province, meanwhile, was Thompson at -18.7 °C.

Most of the Parkland is under an Extreme Cold Warning with temperatures expected to stay that way into Friday morning. Things do improve on Saturday with a high of -5°C in Dauphin and Roblin is showing a high of plus 1°C on Sunday.

While the cold weather sticks around, it's recommended to stay inside if you can and make sure if your furry friends need to go outside for a bathroom break, that they do not stay outside long.

Hang in there Parkland, warmer days are on the way.

Icy road conditions are said to have contributed to a single-vehicle collision in St. Lazare on Tuesday that claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman from Birtle.

Russell RCMP says the accident happened around 10:30 Tuesday morning on Highway 41 in the community.

They say the vehicle went off the road and was found at the bottom of a steep hill, crashed into a tree.

The driver was transported to hospital with serious injuries, where she was eventually pronounced dead.

The Rotary Club of Dauphin has announced that proceeds from last month's Holiday Smile Cookie campaign with Tim Horton's have been placed in a new fund established through the Dauphin and District Community Foundation.

Club President Darren Eddie says the Rotary Centennial Fund will benefit the club and the Dauphin area both near and long term.

"Near term, the funds will probably be between five to six hundred to maybe $1,000 a year.  It will be small to start so it will probably support the scholarships that we provide funding for.  But long-term, if it can get growing, it can be substantial."

After receiving over 87 hundred dollars through the Smile Cookie campaign, Rotary topped up the fund to $10,000, which is the minimum that the DDCF has to have to be able to provide grants.

Eddie adds the public can also make contributions if they wish to the fund through the Community Foundation.

The "Coolest Building in Town" fundraiser for the Watson Arts Centre continues to move closer to it's goal of raising $12,000 to wrap up paying for the installation of heat pump technology, which is expected to take place next summer.

Cam Bennett with the Watson gave an update on fundraising efforts Wednesday morning on the CKDM Morning Show with Justin Allin.

"We just need a little more to cover those things that tend to show up as well as taxes.  The goal is $12,000 so that we can be open 12 months of the year and bring the temperature down 12 degrees in the summer.  And I can happily report that we have raised over $9,000."

Bennett explains how you can contribute,

"You can go right to our website (www.watsonartscentre.com) it is right there on the front page there is a button that will lead you to that information.  You can e-transfer us.  And you can also drop off cash.  I had a gentleman on (Tuesday) night pull out his wallet at the concert and give me $100 cash for the initiative."

Cheques and credit card donations will also be accepted.

Construction of the Spirit Sands Medical Clinic in Glenboro is getting a $100,000 boost courtesy of Sunrise Credit Union.

Once completed, the 3,250-square-foot clinic will accommodate 3-4 health practitioners and serve the municipalities of Glenboro-South Cypress, Prairie Lakes, Argyle, Victoria, and Oakland-Wawanesa.

The estimated cost of the project is $2.5 million, and the fundraising effort is currently about halfway to the goal.

Sunrise Credit Union CEO/President Tim Klassen said in a news release that they are proud to support this new project adding they want to ensure that families and neighbours have access to healthcare for future generations.

Construction is expected to start in the spring and take approximately one year to complete.

An extreme cold warning has been issued for most of the Parkland and Southwestern Manitoba.

According to Environment Canada, the wind chill will reach levels of -40 or colder today and into tomorrow morning.

You should consider postponing or cutting short any planned outdoor activities during that time as frostbite will occur in a matter of minutes,

The Food Bank and Christmas Hamper program in Winnipegosis will receive a significant boost today as a donation drive takes place today.

Donations of non-perishable food items or cash can be dropped off between noon and 3 pm today at the Winnipegosis Youth Centre,

All monetary donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt.

Every child deserves the wonder of unwrapping a gift during the holiday season, and the Dauphin Friendship Centre ensures that happens.

Robin Gambler with the DFC has the Angel Tree Program running once again this year.

"The Angel Tree Program has been going on in Dauphin for numerous years. The Friendship Centre took over about 26 years ago. We get people to sit at the tree at the mall, and everyone who applies for a Christmas hamper, if the family hasn't been adopted out, this ensures every child gets a gift."

Gambler is always amazed at the giving spirit of Dauphin, both on the table and under the tree.

"you know what? Dauphin is amazing. Toward the Food Bank, towards the angel tree, towards all of our Christmas hampers, they're very generous. there's not always someone sitting at the tree, and people are making sure they're bringing numerous gifts to the friendship center and I store them and get them ready for next week."

There is still time to volunteer and get gifts in. A signup sheet is available at the tree, and the DFC to volunteer your time, and both locations accept gifts.

Gambler wants to send out her sincere thanks to everyone who contributed.

Giving a gift for a family that needs it spreads an immense amount of holiday cheer.

The Manitoba Métis Federation has published an announcement, clearly separating themselves from the Métis National Council.

In a new release today, Will Goodon, MMF Minister of Housing and Property Management claimed the MNC was racked with issues, and no longer represents the Métis population.

“It’s clear that they have banded together in an attempt to hide their issues behind the MNC brand and gain the credibility they lack. This is deeply concerning, particularly when we consider the financial impact of their actions – under who’s authority are they making decisions and spending dollars intended for citizens?”

The MNC was once the advocacy body of legitimate Métis people but has seen the departure of the MMF, the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan, and Métis Nation British Columbia in recent years, leaving only Alberta and Ontario as members.

Under the MNC’s by-laws, at least two founding governing members are required to make any decisions, but only one founding member remains from Alberta.

Even within Alberta, both the Métis Settlements of Alberta and the Alberta Métis Federation have clearly stated, as confirmed by the federal court, that the Métis Nation of Alberta does not represent their Citizens, rights, or interests.

MNC has longstanding and well-known issues with its pan-indigenous identity theft.

Goodon says the MNC needs to be addressed and dealt with before the problem gets worse.

"Any partners engaging with the MNC – or worse, providing funding to it – must ask direct and pointed questions about the authority and legitimacy of this body, and take immediate action to mitigate the damage the MNC is doing before it is too late."

This comes after the Manitoba Métis Federation signed their modern treaty of self-governance, cementing them as the Metis Government in Canada.

A search of a residence in the RM of Whitehead, near Alexander, has resulted in the arrest of two men.

The Manitoba West District CREST Unit executed the search warrant last Thursday, with assistance from Brandon RCMP and Brandon City police.

Among the items seized were a firearm and ammunition, cash, 296 grams of cocaine and 70 grams of meth, as well as a motorcycle that was reported stolen from Brandon in mid-October.

45-year-old Robert Saunders and 50-year-old Lyle Huber both remain in custody, facing firearm and possession charges between the two of them.

Gilbert Plains Municipality is cautioning residents that staff will be conducting controlled burns of tree and shrub piles over the next few days.

The burns will take place at the old waste disposal site area at the end of Findlater Avenue.
