The list of local recipients of the King Charles III Coronation Medal continues to grow.
The latest is Carole Shankaruk, who is the Indigenous Education co-ordinator for Mountainview School Division.
Originally from Ste Rose, Shankaruk was presented her medal in Ottawa on Thursday by the Governor General.
She was recognized for her work in promoting mental health and wellness, as well as her contributions to various local not-for-profit organizations.

Tonight is the opening night for Theatre Amisk's production of Nana's Naughty Knickers.
Featuring a local cast and crew, this adult-oriented comedy is set to leave you laughing all night.
Director Martijn Van Luijn is thrilled to share this production with Dauphin.
"Well, what they're for sure going to get is a very, very good time. There's lots of laughs, it's a hilarious play. So it's a really funny comedy, but they're also getting a message. It's really a play that celebrates getting older and that there's still lots of time left and you can do lots of things even when you're an 83-year-old lady."

The province's Ethics Commissioner says our premier did not violate conflict of interest rules in writing a children's book.
Fort Garry MLA Mark Wasyliw - who was kicked out of the NDP caucus last year and now sits as an independent - alleged that Kinew submitted his children’s book, “An Anishinaabe Christmas,” to Penguin Random House after he became premier in 2023, breaching conflict of interest rules.
But Jeffrey Schnoor dismissed that complaint, saying the book was submitted before Kinew’s NDP formed government, and that all conflict of interest conditions in the act were respected.
The act does allow ministers to engage in prohibited activities, provided exceptions are made.
Schnoor said he granted an exemption after a postelection meeting, in which Kinew discussed his ownership of Grey Cloud Media and his work as an author.

A former Parkland resident has been named a King Charles III Coronation Medal recipient.
Manitoba Métis Federation President David Chartrand, who originally hails from Duck Bay, was presented his medal Thursday morning in Ottawa by Governor General Mary Simon.
Chartrand was recognized for providing effective leadership, representing Manitoba's Métis community on several levels, and creating greater educational and healthcare opportunities for members of the Red River Métis.
"I think the accomplishment for me is seeing the people coming to our assemblies by the thousands upon thousands and coming there with such great pride and, at the same time, understanding that things can be achieved, visions can be accomplished, dreams can come true."
The King Charles III Coronation Medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to a particular province, territory, region, or community in Canada.

It looks like Parkland residents are not the only Manitobans abiding by the "Shop Canadian" narrative these days.
A recent poll by Probe Research says 3-out-of-4 Manitobans are actively trying to avoid buying American-made products.
The study also found that 6-out-of-10 Manitobans have cancelled plans to vacation in the U.S. — a significant jump from last October, when the number of travellers from Manitoba who were avoiding the States sat at around 40%.
A total of 63% of respondents also said they feel very or somewhat confident that Premier Wab Kinew is well-suited to deal with U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
The online survey gathered the opinions of 600 adults residing in Manitoba between February 3rd and 6th.

Anyone \ who is interested in staying updated on events hosted by the McCreary Agricultural Society is encouraged to attend the group's Annual General Meeting this evening (Thursday).
It takes place in the Boardroom of the McCreary Municipal Office beginning at 7:30.
Besides the election of board members for the coming year, there will also be updates and opportunities to get involved in activities such as the Trail Ride and the HRA Rodeo.

Don Dewar has become a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of his significant contributions to our region.
MP Dan Mazier recently awarded Dewar while he was serving hot lunches at MacKenzie Middle School through Food For Thought, a program he has supported for nearly seven years.
"I knew that my name had been put forward. Dan only had 25 (awards) for the whole constituency, and it's a large constituency. Both Steve and I received in dauphin received it, and I think that's an accomplishment"
He's also played major roles in building agricultural industries, serving as President of Keystone Agricultural Producers and a founding member of the Parkland Industrial Hemp Growers.
"all the involvement that I've had in the community, in the province, and working in agriculture, working at our local foodbank for years, and most recently the hot lunch program, that's what this award is in recognition of"
While honored by this award, Dewar humbly notes that he just wanted to fill the roles the community needed.
In doing so, his many contributions have made, and continue to make Dauphin an amazing place.

The provincial government has set the date for a by-election in Transcona.
The seat was left vacant after former MLA Nello Altomare passed away on January 14.
Premier Wab Kinew announced the byelection will be held on March 18.
The NDP also unveiled its candidate for the by-election, with Kinew introducing educator Shannon Corbett.
The NDP currently have 33 seats in the Manitoba legislature, the Conservatives have 21, and there is one Liberal and one independent member.

Officers were called to a residence on 3rd Avenue at roughly 3:15 am on Monday, and the homeowner advised someone had entered the residence and stolen money from one of the rooms.
while searching for the suspect with Police Dogs and drones, officers found a male who matched the description provided by the homeowner.
Through their investigation, officers believe the same suspect is responsible for at least five break-and-enters in the south end of Dauphin, possibly more.
Jayson Dumas, 18, of Dauphin has been remanded in custody and is being charged with 11 offences related to Breaking and Entering.
RCMP are looking for additional video or photos from residents in the SW/SE area of Dauphin, or if anyone has come in contact with Dumas to contact the detachment at 204-622-5020

The final fundraising numbers for this year's Journey for Sight snowmobile ride are now in.
Dauphin Lions Club president Dean Lounsbury crunches the numbers.
"We had a 50/50 draw that brought in $3,000, which brought our total to $41,640. And then we had a group of riders out of the South that did a one-day ride on the Sunday after we wrapped up our ride, and they raised around $7,000. So we are close to $50,000."
Lounsbury says the final amount is simply remarkable.
"For 12 riders that started in Flin Flon and a group of 10-15 riders in the south, that is unbelievable. It was a great job by everybody."
Money raised through the ride will go to the Eye Bank at Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg
This year was Lounsbury's 25th year being involved with the ride, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026.
