Manitoba health officials are reporting 11 more deaths and 327 new cases of COVID-19 today.

Today's numbers cover a two-day period, as there was no provincial COVID update on Friday due to the New Year's holiday.

Today’s COVID-19 data shows:

• 16 cases in the Interlake–Eastern health region
• 52 cases in the Northern health region
• 13 cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region
• 33 cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region
• 213 cases in the Winnipeg health region

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 10.4 percent provincially and 11.1 percent in Winnipeg. 

There are 4,559 active cases province-wide and 19,789 individuals who have recovered. The total number of cases in Manitoba is  25,026.

239 people are in hospital with active COVID-19 with 36 in intensive care. There number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Manitoba is 678.

According to the province’s data, there are active cases in the following Parkland health districts: Dauphin (7, up from 5 Thursday), Riding Mountain (4), Swan River (2), Porcupine Mountain (91), Duck Mountain (1), Asessippi (4), Little Saskatchewan (3), and Agassiz Mountain (11). Brandon has 29 active cases.

In the Interlake, the Eriksdale/Ashern health district has 34 active cases, while Fisher/Peguis has 38.

Public health officials advise 11 additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today for the period of Jan. 1 and 2 including: 

• a male in his 50s from the Northern health region 
• a male in his 60s from the Interlake–Eastern Health region
• a female in her 60s from the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region 
• a male in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region 
• a male in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region 
• a female in her 80s from the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region

About 40,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in Manitoba in January.

The roughly 10,000 immunizations per week will feature both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The first shipment of the Moderna vaccine is expected to arrive in Manitoba this week, according to a press release from the provincial government.

Manitoba has joined other provinces in deciding to vaccinate as many people as possible with each vaccine shipment — and will no longer hold back a stockpile for the vaccine’s second dose.

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two injections about three weeks apart to optimally protect against COVID-19.

Premier Brian Pallister says the decision was made as confidence grows around the province’s ability to receive a steady supply of vaccines

Pallister also seemed to suggest some code red restrictions could soon be relaxed, but also said the next 90 days are pivotal, and Manitobans will have to remain vigilant in taking action to reduce the spread.

Arrival Of Moderna Vaccine To Benefit First Nations Communities

With the imminent arrival of the Moderna vaccine, Manitoba health officials say they're working alongside experts in First Nations health to quickly deploy the first doses to northern and remote communities.

The Moderna vaccine is much easier to transport to remote communities, in comparison to the more complicated freezing requirements of the Pfizer option.

Manitoba expects to receive 7,300 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week and will make 5,300 of those doses available to address immediate First Nation priorities.  

The Ongoing Vaccination Campaign In Manitoba

The province’s lone vaccination clinic will move to the RBC Convention Centre beginning Monday, Jan. 4.

Eligibility criteria currently includes the following healthcare workers:
· work in critical care units
· work in long-term care facilities, born on or before Dec. 31, 1969 (changed from 1967)
· work in acute care facilities, born on or before Dec. 31, 1969 (changed from 1967) or
· assigned to a COVID-19 immunization clinic or testing site

Health officials ask that only eligible Manitobans should try to make an appointment, to avoid tying up the phone lines.

Dauphin Fire, RCMP, and EMS responded to a collision in Dauphin Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m.

Emergency crews shut down the intersection of 2nd Street SW and 9th Avenue SW while on the collision scene.

It was determined that one of the drivers went through the intersection while unsafe to do so. There were no serious injuries.

The area has since been cleared and reopened to regular traffic.

There will be no update on COVID-19 number in Manitoba tomorrow (Friday) due to the New Years holiday.

187 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Manitoba on Thursday along with 6 deaths.

Health officials also reported a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Ste. Rose School, and that the individual attended school on Thursday, Dec. 17 when they may have been infectious.

Premier Brian Pallister earlier this week called the eventual relaxation of some lockdown restrictions in the new year an “almost certainty”, but did not offer any further details about which restrictions might be relaxed, and when.

Code red lockdown measures are currently set to expire January 8.

Health officials have warned gatherings over the holidays could reverse some of the recent progress made in the province with regards to case numbers. Dr. Jazz Atwal explains when we might see the impact of holiday gatherings on our daily case numbers, saying “if there were a lot of individuals who potentially were exposed, or doing things they shouldn’t have been doing around Dec. 24, 25, 26 — probably about 7 to 14 days afterwards we’d start to see an increase in cases related to that event.”

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 11.2% provincially and 10.4% in Winnipeg. The total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba is now 24,700. 

There are 4,505 active cases and 19,528 individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 in Manitoba.

There are 247 people in hospital with active COVID-19, and 90 people in hospital who are no longer infectious but continue to require care (337 hospitalizations in total).

There are 33 people in intensive care units (ICU) with active COVID-19, and four people who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care (37 ICU patients in total).

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 667.

A confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported at Ste. Rose School.

Health officials sent a notice on Dec. 26 saying the individual was in school on Thursday, Dec. 17 when they may have been infectious.

The exposure risk has been assessed as low following a public health investigation, and the infection was not believed to be acquired at school.

No close contacts have been identified at Ste. Rose School at this time and no one is required to self-isolate from this exposure.

Anyone who is a close contact has received a close contact letter or phone call from public health.

Four people are facing drug charges after RCMP executed a search warrant at a home in Peguis First Nation on Tuesday.

Officers found around 38 grams of cocaine, cash, and other drug paraphernalia.

A 54-year-old woman and three men aged 56, 33, and 30 – all from Peguis First Nation – were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The four have been released and will be in court on March 16^th.

RCMP continue to investigate.

A woman is facing charges after stabbing an RCMP officer in Portage la Prairie last week.

On Dec. 26 at around 9:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious person in a backyard on Wilkinson Crescent.

An officer found a 40-year-old woman walking on Crescent Road East, and realized the woman was not dressed for the cold weather and that she may be under the influence of a drug.

RCMP say the officer tried to help the woman, but she was unable to answer any questions or identify herself.

The woman tried to flee and fell to the ground, and stabbed the officer in the right thigh during her arrest, according to a release from RCMP.

The officer was able to arrest the woman, and found a capped needle as well as a large homemade knife in her waistband.

Additional RCMP officers arrived at the scene and took the woman into custody, while the injured officer went to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The woman remains in custody and will face a number of charges including Assaulting a Police Officer, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Manitoba added 130 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, along with 2 more deaths.

The deaths include a woman in her 70s from the Northern health region linked to an outbreak at the Thomson General Hospital, and a woman in her 80s linked to the outbreak at Brandon’s Fairview Personal Care Home.

Case numbers have been improving over the past few days — and Dr. Jazz Atwal was asked what Manitoba’s case numbers would have to look like before public health would consider relaxing some restrictions.

“It’s a hard question to answer. It’s not just about case numbers, it’s [also] about the acute care system. We could have small numbers of cases, but if they’re among vulnerable populations, the hospitalizations would be high. I have no black and white answers for you right now — there’s a lot of variables at play.”

When it comes to relaxing restrictions, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the test positivity rate (out of all tests conducted, how many came back positive for COVID-19) should remain at 5% or lower for at least 14 days, before lifting lockdowns.

There are 32 people in intensive care units with active COVID-19, and also four people who are no longer infectious but continue to require critical care (36 ICU patients total).

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 661.
