This weekend is Winter Family Fishing Weekend in Manitoba.

From Saturday until Louis Riel Day Monday, Manitobans and visitors to the province can go ice fishing without needing a fishing license.

The lone exception is national parks, where a federal angling license is still required.

The free fishing promotion is offered in conjunction with free admission to all Manitoba provincial parks, which goes throughout the month of February.

You are also reminded to check ice conditions before travelling onto ice, wear weather-appropriate clothing and tell someone where they will be fishing, in order to make this experience a safe and enjoyable one for everybody.

Anglers must follow all possession limits and size restrictions during this weekend including regulations for specific individual waters.

If you are interested in participating in this year's Parkland Chamber International trip, then you are encouraged to attend a special information meeting scheduled for tonight (Wednesday).

Chamber Executive Director Stephen Chychota says the meeting begins at 7 pm at the Countryfest Community Cinema.

"You can join (the meeting) either in person or online.  We have a link that I can send you so that you can be a part of it no matter where you are.  We will have one of the experts from the travel company in attendance, who knows anything and everything about this trip and how it all works, to go over what is to be expected and to answer any questions and fill everybody in on the whole trip."

This year's trip will take participants to the Tuscany region of Italy.

If you can not make it in person to the info night, you can contact the Chamber at 204-622-3140 to receive a link to attend the event virtually.

If you've fished at Dauphin Lake, you'll know what it has to offer.

If you haven't, now's a good time to check it out. FishingBooker, the world's largest platform for booking fishing trips, has been selecting the best fishing spots for five years, and Dauphin Lake has cracked the Top 10 this year.

And the list isn't just spots in Manitoba, it's the Top 10 from coast to coast.

Rod Carberry fishes at Dauphin Lake and provides guided tours and he's not surprised that Dauphin Lake cracked the list.

"It's pretty exciting stuff, I know the Lake is absolutely filled with fish," said Carberry. "The average for a Walleye seems to be around 22 or 23 inches which is great, that's a good-sized Walleye."

The Lake also offers up Pike and the sizes have been reported as positive. Other fish found include Perch, Sauger, and Freshwater Drum

"There's been some 30 and even 40-inch Pikes caught through the ice," continued Carberry. "The overall health of the Lake seems to be doing very well."

So if you're looking to plan a fishing trip, look no further than Dauphin Lake, during the winter or summer.

The Top 10 list includes Lakes in Toronto, Quebec City, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Calgary, Fort Frances, Kingston, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.

As tariff talk continues, The Federal Government has named a former Manitoba-based Mountie as the point-person for fighting fentanyl.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Kevin Brosseau will take up this role.

Brosseau spent more than 20 years in the RCMP, serving as a deputy commissioner and the senior Mountie in Manitoba.

His appointment is one of the stipulations that prompted President Donald Trump's promise to pause the 25% Canadian Tariffs for 30 days.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted that Brosseau’s role as "fentanyl czar" will involve working closely with U.S. counterparts to accelerate Canada’s efforts to detect, disrupt, and dismantle the illicit trade in the drug.

Dauphin RCMP are on the search for a suspect after a 1st avenue business reported an attempted robbery.

The report says that a lone male had entered the store at roughly 11:30 am, waited for other customers to leave, and presented the clerk with a note stating that he had a bomb.

The note also asked the employee to not press the panic button, and demanded cash.

The suspect fled on foot with nothing, and there were no injuries.

Officers began patrols immediately but were not able to locate the suspect.

The suspect was described as wearing a black face covering, black hoodie, grey pants, and possibly black Converse shoes.

Dauphin RCMP are asking anyone with information to please call the detachment at 204-622-5020.

Gilbert Plains Municipality is hosting a Strategic Planning Open House tonight.

She was transported to the hospital, where she passed away at 12:45 a.m. on February 1.

An autopsy ruled out physical injuries and exposure as the cause of death.

Further test results are being conducted by the Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

Dauphin Emergency Services have responded to a small structure fire on the Dauphin Memorial Community Centre Grounds.

At approximately 3:05 p.m. today, the Dauphin Fire Department dispatched crews to the Rotary Arena, where a fire had engulfed an off-building structure.

The structure, a small booth for announcers beside the grass ring, was quickly extinguished, preventing the spread to other nearby structures.

The cause of the fire is still being determined.

A day of fun on the ice is set for March 8th when the Kin Club of Dauphin host the Dauphin Lake Walleye Dash Ice Fishing Derby.

A total of 200 holes are available at a cost of $130 each, with a total of $15,000 being up for grabs if the event is a sellout.

Nicole Gulenchin encourages you to buy your ticket as soon as possible.

"We are now selling so if you are interested you need to get online and go to that QR code whether it is on a poster or Facebook - wherever you need to go to find that code and get your ticket before you lose out because there are only 200 available."

Rodney Carberry says they are using a system that is not traditionally used in other ice fishing derbys.

"Lake Dauphin has its lake-specific rules with its 48 cm slot limits.  So this formula allows us to use walleye that are over that size.  So you can catch a fish, use one of the supplied lift grip systems that are going to hold that fish in the hole for you.  And then we will get some judges to measure the fish at the hole for you.   It is good for the fish - it stays healthy and we do not have to worry about it being on the ice and cold, it can protect it gills and protect its eyes. "

All proceeds from the event will be returned to the community by the Kin Club.
