Serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba will no longer be investigated by police forces themselves.
The province announced today the launch of the Independent Investigation Unit which will investigate serious matters involving law enforcement officials.
Attorney General Gord Mackintosh called the unit an accountable and independent organization which will work on behalf of Manitobans.
IIU investigations will be mandatory when deaths or serious incidents causing injury occour involving on or off duty police officers.
The unit will have jurisdiction over all police officers in Manitoba, including First Nations, RCMP and municipal police forces.
