Parks Canada has closed the road and trails to Whirlpool Lake and its campground after DNA evidence was found of Zebra Mussels.
Paul Tarleton, Acting Superintendent at RMNP, gives more details on the closures.
“The road is gated right now and will stay gated and there is a sign on the gate that says it’s closed. And then there is a trail that comes farther west, Cowan Lake Trail. It’s closed the Whirlpool Lake Dam, for your listeners who might be aware of the area. We don’t mind if people use that trail, but we just don’t want them going into the area, we want to keep that closed.”
So far no adult zebra mussels have been found and Parks Canada plans to do additional testing in the summer.
