The remains of a fossil fish discovered by a Dauphin area resident will be put on display at the Fort Dauphin Museum on Sunday.

Chris Tait says the remains he discovered in a local river are from a Xiphactinus, which is a tarpon like fish with fangs.

Tait says the process of removing the fossil from the river bank was an interesting one.

"It involved digging a quarry to get down to it. It was a ways off the ground about ten feet up. Then they had to dig a hole to get it out, about a 6' x 6' quarry to get it out, apply the plaster jacket and then figure out from there where it should go. I certainly believe that local fossils should stay in Dauphin rather then being sent off to Winnipeg or another institution."

Tait says it was exciting to discover the fossil which is believed to be 100 million years old.
