This week is mental illness awareness week in the Parkland and it is an opportunity for people to learn more about the often stigmatised issue. 

Mental Illness Awareness Week is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness. Eleanor Snitka the Outreach Manager for the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba talks about why this week in important.

“It’s a time, every year when we acknowledge the importance of people knowing that mental illness still exists and that we are always trying to stamp out that stigma that still exists that people living with mental illness and many times who are afraid to disclose that or even to go get help because of the stigma.” 

Mental health is an important issue for those living in the Parkland.  1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year.
