Thousands of northern Manitoba residents are being evacuated to Winnipeg and Brandon as forest fires force people out of their homes.
The federal government is sponsoring the evacuation according to Jason Small, a spokesperson for the Canadian Red Cross.
“Right now, because this response is supported by the federal government, this is part of a contract with the federal government, the response at this point is covered. We don’t actually need any financial donations or support at the moment. If in the near future we find we do need some assistance from the public, we will certainly come forward and ask the public and see what help would be required then. At this point, we appreciate that people are very thoughtful and caring and want to help. But at this time things are covered, and we will see how things go as things move forward.”
Jason encourages Parkland residents to donate money to the Red Cross to help with future disasters. They can help by going to the organization's website at redcross.ca.
