Manitoba could soon be home to the first large-scale soybean crushing facility in Western Canada.
A new feasibility study-- funded by the federal and provincial governments and industry partners-- found Manitoba has the right mix of production and market demand to support a soybean crushing plant.
It was determined a crushing facility would be economically viable, based on the growth of Manitoba's soybean acreage, and the demand for soybean meal in the Western Canadian Livestock Industry.
The study didn't identify a specific site in Manitoba for the proposed crushing plant, and noted the economics of the operation could be bolstered by crushing canola as well.
There are more than 1.25-million acres of soybeans in Manitoba, accounting for 18 per cent of all soybeans grown in Canada.
